Day 596: A Night on the Town

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey in my Photography section, Dinner at Lydia's

It's official. I'm baaaaaaaaack!

Dale and I had a very very very nice vacation in Montana last week. We had our 'home base' in Helena. Then took day trips into the country. One day we visited Great Falls. Another evening we had dinner in Butte.

My. Oh. My.

Being in the great state of Montana, we thought we'd go off plan for a bit and have a big slab-o-meat out there in range country. We headed down to Butte ... for no good reason. "Just Because." We passed over the continental divide. Learned about the giant Madonna on the hill. Then drove around town, looking for a good steak house — or maybe even a place that had buffalo on the menu.

We stopped to get some directions at a gas station. Dale said we were from out of town and asked if there was a good steak house around. The locals piped up! There was one place that we'd read about online that was mentioned. Then a good ol' boy said, "Yeah. That's pretty good. But if you want a real meal, go on down to Lydia's."

So, we took a chance. When we drove up, we weren't sure about the place. It sits on a highway at the edge of town, out beyond the cemetery.

The sign made it look fairly dated. The building was a bit shabby on the outside. But the parking lot was full of lots of local vehicles (pick-ups with local license plates and gun racks behind the driver's seat, you know).

It seemed like a friendly enough place. After all, Walt was there to celebrate his 90th birthday, right?

Inside, it was quite a nice place! The atmosphere was calm and inviting. There is a whole collection of stained glass windows and lamps on display. The old velvet chairs are plush. The customers were dressed up, friendly and well behaved. The wait staff was polite and attentive. The food — superb!

Lydia's was a delightful surprise. If you ever find yourself in Butte, Montana at dinner time, be sure to drop in. You're in for an excellent meal.

Of course, having loving company as a dinner date makes it all that much better!
