Score!

Go me! Hooray!

I completed another of my 19 in 2019 goals today!

Goal #19:  "Finish at least one of these courses" ... and I gave 7 possibilities. I worked through The Creative License by Danny Gregory.

At the start of the year, I was gung-ho about taking this course and finally learning to draw. My early efforts were good. But then drawing got hard. It made my head hurt to try. I didn't want to pick up my pencil. So I switched gears and used some online tutorials to draw some of my favorite cartoon characters. I liked that better. But I was finding excuses to do anything except draw. Honestly, I'd rather clean the kitchen or do laundry. Instant satisfaction from a job well done!

So I switched gears again. I decided to carefully read through the book, and absorb some of the concepts offered, then use them to apply to the arts I enjoy more. So here are my final thoughts on this book.

Though there are some basic guides to learn to draw in the beginning of the book, that is not the book's primary thrust. The subtitle to The Creative License is "Giving Yourself Permission to be the Artist You Truly Are."

That means giving yourself permission to try and fail at drawing. Then to try and fail at any other art form you choose to attempt.

Danny Gregory uses drawing as his entry point into a creative life. He annoys me sometimes by presuming it's the best entry point ... mostly because of its convenience, I guess. All you need is a pen and a notebook.

Of course, I take issue with that presumption because the concepts he presents can easily be adapted to any creative medium. After all, with a smartphone in your pocket, I'd say that photography is equally or more convenient than drawing. But that is my bias.

He does get around to talking about other artistic mediums toward the end of the book.

What I learned for sure is what I truly already knew: drawing is not something I really want to do, or I would have been compelled to try it a lot earlier in my 61 years on the planet.

I also learned that I'm capable of learning to draw, and can have some success at it if I put the time and effort into it. But it hurts my head right now. I don't itch to pick up a pencil and draw the way my fingers itch for a needle, floss, crochet hook, yarn, or camera.

Will I ever learn to draw? Maybe. If I find the right teacher at the right time in my life.

So I had to ask myself, "Why did you think you wanted to learn to draw at the start of 2019?" That answer is easy.

Whenever someone asks me, "What do you do?" I find that a tricky question. Being an at-home mom and a homemaker for most of my life has been rewarding, but those occupations are not generally satisfying to questioners who are looking for a profession as an answer.

But if I say, "I'm an artist," the response is usually, "Oh! You draw and paint? I wish I could do that." Then I have to say, "No. I can't draw. I'm a needle artist." That always gets a weird look and I have to explain more. Saying "I'm a photographer" is easier to understand, but then people want me to take photos of people or events, and that's not my preferred subject. To me, taking those kinds of photos can hurt my head as much as drawing does.

I took up The Creative License hoping to learn to draw to simply have an easier, truthful answer to a banal question. Honestly, that's an awfully insubstantial reason to want to learn to draw.

At the end of the book, Danny has a  l-o-n-g  list of other art forms to try. I counted 50 that I've already done, most with a degree of success. I'll own that achievement and proudly display those gold stars.

So for now, I'll call this goal reached. I'll return to some of my many other more favored art forms. I have a plethora awaiting my attention in my Studio. Tending to some of those will help me mark off more entries from my 19 in 2019 list of goals.

June Goal Update

I worked on a few little things, and completed a couple big things. Let's take a look.

Goal #8: Go on a Celebrate Your Life retreat.

I'm on the retreat right now! Hope to have things to share when I get home.

Goal #14: Paint and Add Privacy Fencing to the Dog Kennel

Done! And it looks so good. What a huge transformation.

Goal #6: Use Up My Tea Stash

All the oddball tea flavors are used up. I now have black tea, and my two favorite flavored teas left.

Goal #17: Blog at Least 25 Weeks of #throwbackthursday

I've done three more posts, bringing my total to 22. Three more to go to meet my goal.

Goal #18: Blog at least 10 of my Ladies of the Evening collection (mend as needed)

This goal of ten is met, but I went ahead and blogged about two more Ladies in June, bringing my total to twelve.

Goal #19: Finish at least one course:

I read to page 100 of The Creative License. That's the half-way point.

Alt Fun Goal: 50 movies from my Netflix DVD and streaming queues

I watched two more bringing my total to 36.

Whittle a Little
I'm still doing this. Notable this month:
  • I found new homes for some clothes.
  • I unsubscribed from 12 YouTube channels where I was wasting time.
  • I rearranged the paper and cardboard in my Studio and got rid of some I didn't need. That was a bigger job than you'd think it would be.

2019 Totals as of June 30:
9 goals finished
5 goals in progress
3 alternate goals finished
5 alternate goals in progress

19 in 2019 - February Update

I've managed to make progress on a several of my goals.

.
.

Goal #1: Do the finishing work on needlework pieces that are stitched but not ready for display.

I turned In the Garden into a book cover for my gratitude Journal. I've chosen my next finishing project and started gathering the materials I need to complete the project.

Goal #8: Go on a Celebrate Your Life retreat
I registered for the retreat that's coming up in July.

Goal #12: Learn my Enneagram
I've begun the research. I found tests online and a book or two that I might purchase.

Goal #13: Reach a specified weight by February doctor’s appointment
Goal met! In addition, all but one of my other markers went in the right direction. I've set a new goal for my August appointment.

Goal #15: Purge and organize storage shelves in exercise room

I purged the box of Valentine decor and went through the box of St. Patrick's Day decor.

Goal #16: Use up my tea stash

I've continued having hot tea each morning and have used up another box, Celestial Seasonings Raspberry Zinger. I've now started drinking peppermint tea. It's good, but I do like the berry teas better.

Goal #17: Blog at least 25 weeks of #throwbackthursday posts of my 1997 - 2007 projects

I wrote three more posts in February.

Goal #18: Blog at least 10 of my Ladies of the Evening collection (mend as needed)

I wrote one blog post in February. I've picked which Lady to write about next and set up the photo studio for the pictures. I've completed four out of ten posts so far.

Goal #19: Finish one of my eight courses

I'm continuing The Creative License by Danny Gregory. The current lesson has to do with proportion. Here's one piece I drew this month:

Alternate Goal: Watch 50 movies from my Netflix/Amazon queues.

I watched one movie in February, bringing my total to seven:
American Sniper

Alternate Goal: Photo Organization

I made huge progress on this goal. I've edited, shared, and filed photos from my most recent outings (recent = 2 years). I also culled photos on auxiliary devices/formats (phones, Google Drive, Facebook). In addition, I finally backed up my computer after far too many months and talked to Dale about choosing an automated backup system to the cloud.

I've also made progress on three other alternate goals that involve creative pursuits (metal punch stamping, card making, and photography).

I've continued my quest to Whittle a Little something every day. I've been watching videos from several decluttering gurus for inspiration. In February, I:
  • Went through my clothes again
  • Cleaned out more from my bathroom cabinets
  • Filed all my digital photos
  • Cleaned out and deleted old documents on my computer
  • Found a way to use up random and leftover embroidery floss
  • Started burning and enjoying candles from my too-big collection

I find that as I'm shopping, I now ask myself, "If you were moving, would you want to have to pack that?" It has helped me consider my purchases more carefully. When I'm crafting, I ask myself, "Do you really need that new supply? Or can you make do with items in your stash by thinking about those items in a more creative way?"

I feel excellent about the progress I've made.

19 in 2019 - January Update

We're already through the first month of 2019! That went quickly. Here's my first report on how I'm progressing on my 19 in 2019 goals and my year of whittle a little. I've started off with a bang!

Goal #7: Learn to use my pompom makers

Done! They're pretty snazzy little tools.

Then I created a heart-shaped Valentine wreath completely made of pompoms.

Goal #11: Watch the DVD about Lake Missoula

The DVD is called Mystery of the Megaflood. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about how much of the geography in my neck of the woods was formed. After I watched the DVD, I did some more research. If you ever have a chance to visit the Scablands in eastern Washington state, I highly recommend it. Fascinating.

Goal #13: Reach a specified weight by the time of my February doctor appointment

I'm well on my way! My appointment is next week. I made excellent progress on reaching this goal in January. Weight is one of several markers I'm monitoring. All are on track.

Goal #15: Purge and organize storage shelves

This will take quite some time. But I did sift through the Christmas decorations as I put them away, and was able to give quite a number of them away.  This is one spot where Whittle a Little comes in.

I also took several boxes of donations to a thrift store.

Goal #16: Use up my tea stash

I'm getting in the habit of having a cup of hot tea each morning with my breakfast. I've already used up my first box from the stash, Cranberry Apple Zinger from Celestial Seasonings.

Goal #17: Blog at least 25 weeks of #throwbackthursday posts of my 1997 - 2007 projects

I put up posts on all five Thursdays in January. It's rare to have a bonus Thursday!

.
.
Goal #18: Blog at least 10 of my Ladies of the Evening collection (mend as needed)

I've blogged about three so far. One needs to be mended, but I didn't do that yet.

Goal #19: Finish one of my eight courses

I started The Creative License by Danny Gregory. I'm learning to draw!

Alternate Goal: Watch 50 movies from my Netflix/Amazon queues.

I watched two in January:
     1. A Wrinkle in Time
     2. Loving

I'm so pleased!

In January, I completed two goals and made progress on nine. Go me!

Learning to Draw

One of my 19 in 2019 goals is to finish one class/course. I'm starting with The Creative License by Danny Gregory. I've had the book for about 12 years, so seems like a good time to give it a try. I intended to just read through the book and take notes, but then I thought, what the heck. Might as well try the exercises.

This is learning to draw a mug without looking at the pen or paper, just really examining the mug as you draw.

Oh, boy. This is going to be quite a process. Saddle up, partners!
