Sunday Secrets: May 18, 2008

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. I find it to be an amazing sociological experiment. These three secrets resonated with me this week ...

This is funny. My mom was so particular about how the dishwasher was loaded that I used to say I attended the "Emily Codispoti School of Dishwasher Loading." As a mother, I INSISTED that my kids load the dishwasher in the prescribed fashion. After I joined Flylady and learned that "housework done incorrectly still blesses the family, " I finally gave up being so particular. Now that I've loosened my grip on that task, I have all kinds of help with the dishes.

All my life I've shared a birthday. Either with my sister Janet (whose birthday was three days before mine). Or with Gail Kelly (whose birthday was two days after mine). Or with Thanksgiving Day. Or with my daughter Jeanne, who was born on my 27th birthday. As a rare treat, I get to have a birthday all to myself — like on my 50th. That one was a winner!

It's hard to remember this. But if I can, I tend to be much more compassionate.

Day 634 - Speaking of Blossoms ...

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Low-Hanging Branch

All over town, the trees are in bloom.

The wind blows the petals like confetti.

Fancy That

This is what my husband and I did today. Yielded to whim.

We ended up watching a bunch of The West Wing episodes on DVD.

In the late afternoon, we yielded to the whim to go on a drive in the convertible. It's a gorgeous 85+ degree day in north Idaho, the wind strong enough to keep the flags waving and the cherry petals blowing into the lobby of the grocery store. There are a few puffy clouds in the distance over the hills. The air's a bit hazy from the bits of prairie that are in flight with the breeze.

Perfect day for a "top down."

Book Review: 102 Minutes

I've added a short book review of this story of 9/11. The book recreates the 102-minute span between the moment Flight 11 hit the first tower of the World Trade Center, and the moment the second tower collapsed.

You can read my review on my website in
The Bookshelf.

Day 633: Total Irreverence

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
The Light of Christ

Found this on a car in the parking lot of my daughter's high school as we emerged from her Jazz Band concert.

Sorry ... just couldn't help myself!
:: grin ::

Shhhhhhhh

But to hear, you need to get quiet.
Hush.
Be calm.

Day 632: On My Desk - Fix-It Time

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Repair Job

I keep procrastinating. But just how hard can it be and how long will it take to just fix the thing?

Melodrama

Well, except maybe in my life! ;-)

Day 631: Even the Lowliest Share a Stark Beauty

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Weeds

On the back side of the path, protected from the street by a line of trees, the weeds of last Fall stand.

The nice thing about taking walks is getting to trod the less-worn path where gems like this hide out.

If Ya Gotta Have Strife ...

... then strive this way.

There just aren't that many of us that can be a perfect "10."

Yes, yes. I realize you think I am, but listen, bub ... I'm not.

What a shocker.

It's true, though, isn't it? Strive for excellence and at least you'll hit, "Hey, not bad!"

But strive for perfection, and you'll be sure to disappoint yourself.

I'll take a "Not Bad!" over feeling disappointed or demoralized every time.

Two of my Favorite Ladies

Happy
Birthday

to two of
my very
favorite women

My adopted grandmother, Catherine ... and my mom, Emily

Day 630: Are We in Holland Yet?

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Red Bulbs

Another image from my rain-spattered walk.

They look thirsty, don' they? And fresh from their shower.

Speaking of which, time to go take mine.

Teeter-Totter

Ah. Learning to maintain equilibrium. I know a thing or two about that.

I strive for balance, logic and wholeness each day. On the good days, I have some. On the tough days, things get skewed to one end or the other. My teeter-totter can make me fly or bang hard into the ground.

For even on some days where I have "balance," the balance comes from being really positive on one end and really negative on the other, all in the span of 24 hours. So I may have balance on that day, but with extremes in emotions, at what cost?

Equilibrium. There are some medications that can help. Mood stabilizers. Antidepressants. Depressants. Finding the balance of those things is tough, too. I was recently in a room full of folks suffering from wide mood swings. The cocktail of medications some of them had to take was complex. It was difficult to tell if the meds were working. So yes, medications can help, but they are not the complete answer.

I've mentioned before that I go to counseling. The length of time between visits has a lot to do with how balanced I feel. My counselor is great — she and I "fit" well as professional and patient, so talking with her gives me food for thought. Listening to her suggestions and trying some of them out gives me room to grow. I get a lot of help from her.

But ultimately, Dr. Braceland is right on the money. The best hope for maintaining equilibrium lies within ourselves. We need to be aware of our thoughts, our actions. We need to seek the help we need. Then we need to take counsel with ourselves and follow our best prayers. For by maintaining equilibrium, we can move on to make sound decisions that make our lives — and the lives in our circle of humanity — fuller and more positive.

We get to spread the hope.

Day 629: The Rain, It Does Fall

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Pine Drop

Then lingers on the trees.

Genius!

I appreciate the notion of Big Ideas. (It's likely part of the reason I married an Idea Guy).

So if you want to learn the secret to ideas, might as well follow the lead of a genius, yes?

And how simple. Kindness. Beauty. Truth.

Day 628: It's Getting Hot Around Here

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Hot Pink

I headed west on my walk this rainy morning. For the next few days, you'll see evidence of some different foliage along that path.

These hot pink blooms grow on a bush in the front yard of the church secretary's house.

Priorities

Yup. It's all about priorities.

What's important will get done, because you make the time and give it the attention to get it done.

Just ask a busy person.

Sunday Secrets: May 11, 2008

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. I find it to be an amazing sociological experiment. Only one of this week's secrets resonated with me ...

Well, I don't know that I'm "cooler" ... but my kids DO call me "The FUN Mom"!

And LOOK what I received for Mother's Day!

626: Bustin' Out

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Pretty in Pink

All throughout our neighborhood, the trees are bursting out in these pink blossoms.

Dank winter is really gone.

Wuv ... twoo wuv ...

In honor of my sweet husband, I offer Today's Phrase:

Happy Birthday, Honey!
You're worth it!

Day 625: Shot of Color

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Bloomin'

The tulips in my own yard have not yet arisen. That's the problem with living in a gully. Too many trees. Too many shadows. It takes the sun a bit longer to warm the ground.

But around the neighborhood, up on the flats, our neighbors yards are bustin' out in color! Rich and vibrant juxtaposed against soft and pretty. Over the next couple days, you'll see evidence of both.

Today's shot of color, courtesy of these flaming tulips.

Perfectly Imperfect

I truly believe it.

I think it's evident in my photos.

Like yesterday, that pretty little blue eggshell, newly hatched. I took photos of it from several angles. Some barely showed the inside, so all that was seen was the perfect shape and color. But I chose to post the one with the bloody evidence of birth. Why? Because it seemed more real. Less like a photo ... More like life. There is struggle in birth! That doesn't make the new chick any less beautiful.

Another of my personal favorites? Day 56. The Waning of Summer. Why? Because it's a whole pile of dead flowers, with one small fresh daisy tucked away in the corner. To me, that bunch of flowers is beautiful for its imperfections. And more poignant for its one bit of glory.

I like this one, too. Day 370. Infestation. That gorgeous, gorgeous rose. So beautiful, you can practically smell it through the monitor. Yet hiding on its underbelly? The bugs. Does it make the rose any less beautiful?

Certainly, I have my own boatload of imperfections. Yet I am loved. And through the eyes of love, I am beautiful.

It's good to know!

Day 624: Where's the Birdie?

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Hatched

I found this portion of an eggshell on the edge of the bike path that runs through our neighborhood.

Signs of Spring are everywhere. I wonder ... will I get to see the chick that hatched from this egg?

I had the presence of mind to carry my macro lens with me when I went out on my walk today. Sometimes, I wonder what the neighbors think when they seem me plop down on the ground and look intently at some minuscule object.

Help Yourself, Help Others

Isn't this the essence of living a life of fulfillment?

I believe that we souls are put here on earth with a purpose. Our goal is finding that thing in life that captures our soul's energy and puts us in action in the place we are meant to be.

In other words, set out in the world to help yourself become fulfilled.

In doing so, we end up in a life of service to others.

I hope. I try to live this way. Sometimes ... I still feel purpose-less.

Happy Dance: Tiny Trimmings

Ta-da!

Nine little ornaments all in rows.

I'll be donating these ornaments to charity. This time, money raised from selling ornaments will be donated for diabetes research.

These designs are from Cecelia Turner of Heart In Hand Needleart. I finished them as little puffy pillows.

You can read a bit more about the ornaments on my website in Cameo's Corner.

Day 623: On My Desk - Bits O' Christmas Future

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Ornament Makings

Here's my next installment as a participant in this photo meme.

I finally took the time to dig through my stash and found a nice Christmas plaid to use as the body of these ornaments.

I wanted to assemble the ornaments as little stuffed pillows, but with the stitching appliquéd to the front of the pillow with the edges of the stitchery fringed. That takes a bit longer than simply added a fabric back to the stitchery, but I like the way they look when hanging on a tree.

I used a bit of picot-edged satin ribbon for the hangers. I was lucky to have a nice dark green ribbon in my stash, too.

As of this posting, I have completed them (close up photo in next blog entry). They'll be boxed up and sent off to charity. These will be donated to the Diabetes Tree at The Busy Needle.

Is It Important to You?

In my own small way, this is how I feel about my photo journey. When I started out, I just wanted to see if I took lots of photos, over time, consistently, would it be possible to start taking better photos.

I tell you, it's the discipline that has helped me the most. The daily taking and posting of photos. And then, when I missed a day or few, to not beat myself up or try to catch up, but to just start taking and posting photos again.

It was the discipline that was significant. The success — the gradual increase in quality — was secondary. Another success? Finding out what kind of photos I most enjoy taking. For me, macro (close-up) photos of things rather than people.

In college, I was an English major ... literature, criticism and writing. I was always told that the best writers are the ones that write every day ... that just the doing would make one better. Though I go in spurts of writing daily (usually in my journal), I was never quite able to get in the habit of daily writing. Now that I have a blog, I do a bit of writing most days ... though not a lot of editing. I'm not sure if I'm becoming a better writer. I do know that I enjoy flexing my vocabulary here.

I've found that the same thing does hold true for photography. The success comes from the daily baby steps of just being consistent. Now, I'm starting to flex the muscles of my camera's capabilities. I'm learning to use settings other than "auto." I'm learning to frame my subjects better. I'm learning to play with light.

Want to get better, to have more success at something you enjoy doing? Take on Nike's motto:

"Just Do It."

Day 622: Classic Game Piece

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Life Car

This is another of the classic game pieces found while cleaning out a closet. It's one of the cars from the game of Life.

I used it as a model for another of my photo class assignments. This time we were challenged to use some indirect flash. So this little car was placed on a black background. I attached my macro lens to my camera so I could get a good close-up shot.

Then I took a piece of an aluminum can and concocted a flash deflector from it by bending it "just so" and attaching it over the flash part of my camera. The idea is that the flash will deflect off the aluminum can, and instead of flashing directly onto the object being photographed (thus, adding harsh light), the flash goes UP. You still get the effect of extra light from the flash, but it is less harsh.

Pretty neat trick and one that I'll practice using some more.

This whole notion of bouncing light around to suit my photographic purpose is interesting to me. It takes quite a bit of experimentation, though. I just need to stop fussing about failure, and try a bunch of ideas to see what works.

Then ... uh ... remember those so I can use them again.

Gotta Take the Bad with the Good

Ain't it the truth.
:: sigh ::

Today certainly is not a success-only day for me. I had to face a new truth that doesn't feel all that good. It does cause me to doubt who I really am.

But ...
parts of today are quite successful.

Might as well concentrate on those, yes?

Day 621: Just Nan's Rose Lady

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Just Nan's Rose Lady

Today was the last session of my digital photography class. Though it was only five sessions long, I feel like I did learn a thing or two that ought to help my photo-taking skills.

This week, we were playing with light again. The challenge for this photo was to use available light. I took this close-up photo of Rose Lady (which I stitched last year) beside a window in our family library. The light is coming from the right. It makes a nice glow on the satin frame, don't you think?

I had to play with the placement of the easel a bit to get a nice angle. I like the way that even the beads show up in this photo.

By the way, my used chart is still available for purchase:

Mine's for Sale!
Used. Chart only in original packaging.
Excellent condition.
$4.00 for pattern + $1.00 shipping = $5.00
E-mail me for details.
International orders, add $.50 extra for shipping.

What's Your Challenge Today?

Today's challenge?
To see if I could get back on the elliptical for a while.
I thought I'd try 20 minutes. As I got going, I was able to do over 30!
Go me!

My next challenge this morning has to do with my camera and some photos. We'll see ...

Sunday Secrets: May 04, 2008

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. I find it to be an amazing sociological experiment. These are the secrets resonated with me this week:

I wondered if my daughter was thinking of her birth father last August ...

Every Wednesday, I quilt with my "old hag" friends.
These women range in age from 50 to 94.
They still ARE beautiful!

As do I!

19 years later, I'm still cresting the mountain with my Dale.
The circumstances of our life changes.
Our faith in each other permutates ...
Yet remains.

Day 620: Tinys of Spring

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section,
Phlox

Such a bright shot of color in the shadows of the deck.

Spring finally made it.

Light Bulb Moment

When I was in college, I had the profound fortune to work on campus at the small literary press. I've always loved books. I came to love publishing.

To me, it's the most marvelous thing to watch something start as an idea in an author's head. Go through the writing and re-writing process. The editing. The design, typesetting, layout. And off to the printers.

When the new publication came in, I could hold in my hand this ephemeric idea that now had bones and muscle and sinew and could last through generations.

One of my husband's qualities that I admire most — and am most drawn to — is that he is an idea guy. A future thinker. He's hard to stay up with! But he gets these notions that he can verbalize in print. The ideas may sit on a shelf for five years or more. Eventually, some of them play out. Many are successful.

I like being close to him, to generate my own ideas through osmosis. To become a purveyor of possibility.

Day 619: At Jodie's Band Concert

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section, Conductor's Stand

Dale and I attended Jodie's band concert earlier in the week. It was the best we've been to at the high school. We're quite proud of our flautist.

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

Yeah. Write 'em down. Tell your friends. Get yourself a reward.

So many disappointments ... can turn into resentments. We must reprogram our brains to remember the good stuff. The victories. The accomplishments.

We must learn to be gentle to ourselves. Then it's much easier to be gentle to others -- and to praise others for their victories and successes.

Day 618: Darling Daughter

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section, Jodie Blue Eyes

Jodie came home from school with a beautiful tulip.
Tucked behind her ear, two beautiful blooms setting each other off.

Ah, go on. Give it a try!

My husband believes that if you're not failing at least a third of the time, you're living life too safely. He believes in taking risk.

I try and use the essence of that idea in my life. To go ahead and try. To believe that if I start, I'll learn enough along the way to keep on going. That bumps and potholes are a normal part of the road. So there will be trial and error in this journey I call Life.

The cool thing is ... if you keep it up long enough ... for most things you try ... eventually, there will be success.

Day 617: My Sweet Husband ...

I added this new photograph to Creative Journey
in my Photography section, Happy Thursday!

My sweet husband knew I was having "a day" yesterday. When he got home from work, he took care of me. Fed me dinner. Eased me to sleep.

He was up early, getting our daughter off to school, him to work.

When I woke up later, I found these waiting for me on the kitchen table.

NO! You CAN'T have him. He's all mine!
;-)

And I am one grateful woman.

Who is in Control Here?

Wow, was that a lesson I learned from my first marriage!

Funny, when that marriage ended, I felt like such a huge failure. I couldn't make my husband stop drinking. I couldn't make dreams enough for both of us to share. I couldn't save my marriage.

Now, I see that time as such a success. He ended up dying from his inability to cope with the world without the aid of a substance. But I was able to leave that bad environment with two babies in diapers, find housing, a job, a way to keep us fed and healthy, pre-school care, etc. etc. etc.

I learned that through failure, success is born. But I could only be in control of myself.
