On one of our August Travel Tuesdays, Dale and I headed a little north and east to find Filbert Meadows Park in the Santa Clara neighborhood. This is a lovely space in the center of a neighborhood of single family homes.
The park's landscape is in its name. There's both a grove of filbert trees at one end of the park, and a open play space / meadow at the other end.
This area of Oregon is famous for its filberts. You may know them as hazelnuts. All around the countryside, and in some pockets in town, are orchards of these squat leafy trees, lined up in rows.
Until I moved here, I never knew what filberts looked like as they're growing. Here's a cluster of three hiding among the broad leaves.
These ripened filberts may look more familiar. You'll find them dotting the ground beneath the trees. Hazelnuts are one of my favorites - especially when wrapped up in chocolate in Ferrero Rocher candy. (The original flavor is my favorite candy ever!)
Along the edge of the park opposite the road is this winding bark-covered walking path.
It leads to the other end of the park and the open meadow. There's lots of running room here for throwing a Frisbee, flying a kit, or starting a pick-up game of soccer.
In the following days I'll show more of the park play areas, and the local art.
